The inaugural Washington and Lee University Wrestling Camp just completed and it was a great weekend of wrestling. Over 40 wrestlers came to Washington and Lee for a three day (Friday August 5 – Sunday August 7) camp held in Doremus Gymnasium. They included three returning W&L wrestlers, six incoming freshmen, and about 35 high school juniors and seniors. Wrestlers came from 12 different states:
Arkansas | Florida | Georgia | Maryland | Missouri | North Carolina | New Jersey | Ohio | Pennsylvania | Virginia | Indiana | New York
Four sessions on the mat and two early morning strength and conditioning sessions pushed the campers physically, while a number of speakers- Jan Hathorn, W&L Athletic Director; Grace Loughhead, Associate Director of Admissions; Robert Humston, Faculty Athletic Mentor for the wrestling team; Rob Straughan, Dean of the Williams School of Commerce, and Paul Youngman, Head of the Department of German, Russian, and Arabic– informed the campers about the academic opportunities available to Washington and Lee students.
W&L alumni participation also helped make the camp a great experience for the wrestlers. Ron Tassoni ’16 and Richard Redfoot ’89 returned to campus to work with the campers, along with Perry Lloyd ’84, who returned, bringing his son, a rising junior at Elkin, NC.
