It was an exciting day for the Generals wrestlers at the Washington and Jefferson Invitational on week 2 of the 2016-17 competition season. The Generals were in 2nd place overall after round 1, and actually took over the top spot in the team standings late in the day when Zach Bylykbashi secured a fall in his semi-final match. However, with Zach finishing 2nd, Rexx Hallyburton taking 4th place, and Shane Conners finishing strong in 5th place, the Generals settled for 6th place overall in a very talented field. The W&J Invite drew teams from across the country, including Iowa, New England, Virginia, and from across the midwest. There were several DII teams competing as well, making it a great early measuring stick for our wrestlers.
Tournament Highlights
- 2 freshmen placed in the top 6: Rexx Hallyburton beats the returning runner-up on his way to the semifinals, finishes in 4th place. Shane Conners has a breakout performance only losing once on his way to 5th place.
- Only a sophomore, yet the team leader, Zach Bylykbashi picks off where he left off last year and makes it into the finals, finishing 2nd place.
- 8 out of our 13 wrestlers entered won at least 2 matches and every single W&L wrestler won at least 1 match.
- Although there were 13 W&L wrestlers who competed, only 8 counted toward the team score. Only one scoring wrestler was allowed per weight class (no one entered at 174 or 197). The 6th place finish was a really good accomplishment, and we were in the top three for most of the day.
