Day 2 Preview

Five Generals wrestlers advanced to day 2 of the NCAA East Regional, hosted by Ferrum College. Zach Bylykbashi (133 lbs) and Joe Scott (165 lbs) won their first two matches to reach the semifinals, which will be contested Saturday morning starting at 9 am. A win in the semifinals not only puts the wrestler into the championship finals, but also secured him a bid to the NCAA National Championships, held at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse on March 10-11.

Zach Bylykbashi squares off against Nathan Pike, NYU senior who was an national finalist a year ago and defeated Bylykbashi by a point when they wrestled last season. Tomorrow’s semifinals will be their first meeting this season.

Joe Scott also will wrestle against a NYU opponent, sophomore Maykel Dolorit. Joe earned his first berth to the regional semifinals by avenging an early season loss to Ferrum’s Andrew Tolbert.

The top three placers in each weight class at this regional advance to the NCAA tournament, meaning that the three Generals wrestlers in the consolation side of the bracket also still have a shot to qualify for the national tournament. They will need to win one match tomorrow to place in the top 6 and three straight matches to take third place and earn a birth to nationals. Shane Conners (157 lbs), Rexx Hallyburton (184 lbs), and Matt Kaminer (285 lbs) are all in the wrestle-backs.

Shane will face Centenary’s Alec Donovan, who was upset as the 4th seed in the first round. Rexx will wrestle Ferrum’s Adam Bresson, who Rexx narrowly defeated back on November 5th, when W&L opened the season with a dual at Ferrum. Matt will wrestle Kyle Cocozza from TCNJ.

As a team the Generals sit in 11th place overall with 25.5 pts. There are 19 teams in the region, led by Ferrum 69 pts. However, the Generals remain in striking distance of Gettysburg, TCNJ, Greensboro, USMMA and Delaware Valley, making a top 6/7 finish a possibility.
